Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in America. It is a chronic, progressive disease of the center of the retina (macula) where all of our central, fine vision comes from. It is associated with family history, older age, Caucasian race, and smoking.
Symptoms include:
- central vision distortion
- wavy lines
- new black spots
Treatment consists of minimizing risk factors with smoking avoidance/cessation and eye vitamin supplements in high risk patients. In severe cases, patients will need more invasive treatments, such as eye injections and/or lasers in the eye. Dr. Tony T. Choi is keenly experienced in the management of patients with macular degeneration.
